Croyde Bay is renowned as one of the best surfing beaches in the UK and on the beach is one of the UK's premier surf schools.

Surf South West have been teaching here in North Devon for 16 years and have gained a number of awards including being the first surf school to be named a 'Centre of Excellence' by the British Surfing Association.

Their qualified instructors will have you riding the waves in no time and ensure learning to surf is a thrilling and safe experience. Intermediate and more advanced coaching is also available.

Surfing top tips for newbies

New to surfing or new to Croyde Bay and not sure where to start? Below are a few pointers to help make your stay at Surfer's Paradise a fun and memorable one!

  • Keep warm! Get a wettie and make sure it fits you properly. You can buy one or hire one at our OffShore Surf Shop
  • Don't forget your leash! One of the most important bits of kit and saves you loosing your board
  • Pick your board. Foamies or pop-outs are ideal for beginners and are best between 8 and 9ft long.
  • Paddling. One of the keys to good surfing is getting the paddling right and it's down to good balance, good positioning and good timing. All can be achieved with good practice!
  • Keep safe! Listen to the lifeguards and never surf beyond your limits. We've put together some safe surfing tips to help keep you safe in and out of the water.
  • Be courteous at Croyde! You're a guest here and as much as we love having you visit, please understand that the beach is used by families, locals and other holiday makers.
